Indian Daal with Creme Fraiche Recipe

Prep time: 10 minutes — Cook time: 40 minutes — Total time: 50 minutes — Serving: 2 people

Description

Easy recipe for Indian Daal which is a delicious and healthy vegetarian dinner. It is one of our favorite Indian things to eat. It is made with lots of spices, red lentils, onion, garlic, carrots, and more. You can serve it with or without rice. We usually just have naan bread as our side.

Ingredients

Daal

1 yellow/white onion

2 garlic cloves

4.41 oz (125 g) carrots

0.6 inches 1.5 cm) fresh ginger

1.5 teaspoon curry

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon chili flakes

3.53 oz (100 g) dried red lentils

0.42 cups (1 dl)

0.85 cups (200 ml) coconut milk

7.05 oz (200 g) chopped tomato, canned

salt/pepper

Other

3.53 oz (100 g) creme fraiche (oat or soy if you want vegan. We just use regular)

1.06 oz (30 g) salted almonds

0.1 bundle fresh parsley

2 x naan bread

Directions

  1. Chop garlic and onion into fine pieces with your favorite KUMA kitchen knife.
  2. Peel carrots and cut into dice.
  3. Grab your KUMA Paring Knife to easily remove the fresh ginger skin, and then cut ginger into fine pieces.
  4. Heat up a pan with oil and add onion, garlic, and ginger.
  5. Sauté until they are soft.
  6. Now add curry, chili flakes, ground cumin, and diced carrots. Mix it all well together so the spices can get a quick “burn” (the point before turning black and actually burning, but we want to expose the spices to a lot of heat to activate the flavors).
  7. Now add the red lentils, water, chopped tomatoes, and coconut milk. Mix it all together.
  8. Let it simmer on low/medium heat for about 20-30 minutes until it starts to thicken. Remember to stir frequently so it doesn’t burn in the bottom. Finally taste with salt and pepper.
  9. If you think your daal ends up too thick, add a little more water and stir.
  10. Serve your daal topped with creme fraiche, chopped fresh parsley, salted almonds, and warm naan bread.

How to introduce vegetarian food to meat-lovers

If you’ve followed us for a while you know how much we love a steak or a thick burger, and when we need inspiration in the supermarket for what to make for dinner, we do often look in the meat isle as the starting point. Yet here we are, sharing a new vegetarian recipe with you all. But fear not my fellow meat lovers - this recipe is SO flavor packed that you really won’t miss the meat. You won’t even think that something is missing - not the flavor, not the consistency, not the structure. If you have to introduce vegetarian food to someone who isn’t the biggest fan of such food, the Indian classic dahl is THE way to go. It is one of our personal favorite vegan recipes. I swear your kitchen will smell like paradise when you start cooking with all the lovely spices we use.

Dahl or daal?

Is it dahl or daal? Or is it dal or dhal - what’s the right spelling? We see it spelled these 4 different ways. If you what the deal is, we would LOVE to hear from you on our social media! No matter the spelling, it is a wonderful Indian meal. It is so filling and full of beautiful flavors.

Vegetarian recipes and vegetarian food

We try to expand our category for vegetarian food as we can tell many of our readers really wish for more recipes without meat. Personally we love aiming for 1-2 meatless days every week. As people who really love meat, we know and understand the difficulty in finding vegan recipes / vegetarian food that is equally exciting, but a recipe like daal is a perfect way to begin. Our growing collection on vegan / vegetarian recipes on the website is also a great place to look for inspiration. Coming from people who love bacon, tenderloin, sausages and all that good stuff, trust us that our vegetarian recipes are true and tried - and carefully brought to life but meat-lovers. Vegetarian meals such as daal are good for the climate, we do believe meat is healthy but in moderate amounts, and it’s also a great way to save some money on your food budget.
