Frikadeller (Danish Meatballs) Recipe

Prep time: 40 minutes — Cook time: 10 minutes — Total time: 50 minutes — Serving: 12 meatballs

Description

Easy recipe for traditional Frikadeller, the Danish classic meatballs. Serve your Frikadeller with a side of something like potatoes, gravy and perhaps a good salad. This is easy dinner and if you have any leftovers, they make for a perfect lunch the next day - or you can put them in the freezer for another easy dinner in the future.

Ingredients

1.1 lb (500 g) ground pork

1 yellow onion

1 egg

0.42 cups (1 dl) milk

4 tablespoons flour

1 teaspoon salt

pepper

Directions

  1. Peel onion and grate it as fine as possible. The consistency should be almost a purée.
  2. Mix minced meat with salt in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly. If you have a hand mixer og kitchen machine, use that to get the ideal consistency. If you don’t have such tools, you’ll be just fine using your hands.
  3. Add onion, egg, milk, flour, salt and pepper. Stir thoroughly again to incorporate everything.
  4. Now put the mixture in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  5. After 30 minutes, remove the bowl from fridge and grab a tablespoon and a cup of water. Heat up a pan on medium-high with a good amount of butter.
  6. Use the spoon to scoop up the meat and form it into a meatball between the spoon and your opposite hand. Put the meatball on the pan, dip the spoon in the water, and then repeat with a new meatball. The water helps the meatballs not stick as much to the spoon.
  7. The Frikadeller is cooked for about 5 minutes on both sides.
  8. When each meatball is done, remove from pan and onto a plate with kitchen towel to catch the grease. If your pan gets dry between meatballs, add some more butter.
  9. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

Recipe for classic Danish Frikadeller

Here you get an easy recipe for the delicious and beloved traditional Danish Frikadeller. As a Dane myself, this recipe is how my grandmother used to make them, so what you get right here is the real deal.

They are made with ground pork, finely grated onion, egg, milk, flour, salt, and pepper. This is classic Danish food when it’s best. You can serve them in the old fashioned way with boiled potatoes and brown gravy, or if you feel like modernizing the recipe a bit, you can serve with a good tomato salad or melon salad which goes great with the fatty meat. Potatoes are almost a must when you make Frikadeller, but you can switch up how you make them and serve creamy scalloped potatoes, baked potatoes with sesame seeds or a creamy potato salad with curry.
